Dear Colleagues,
Geriatric Medicine is a discipline that deals with health problems, social status, functional status, quality of life, preventive medicine issues of patients aged 65 years and older, and aging of the community. According to the “Specialty in Medicine By-Laws” in Turkey, 3 years of geriatric medicine education is required after 4-5 years of internal medicine residency to become a geriatrician. In Turkey, there are 9 Geriatric Medicine Departments under Internal Medicine Departments, which are at Hacettepe University, Ankara University, Gulhane Military School, Cerrahpasa Medical School, Istanbul Medical School, Isparta Süleyman Demirel University, Akdeniz University, Ege University, and Gaziantep University. Within these departments Hacettepe, Ankara, Cerrahpasa, Istanbul, and Gulhane Medical Schools are giving geriatric medicine specialty education.
Academic Geriatrics Society, which was founded in 2005 embodies almost all of the geriatricians in Turkey. Aims of the society are supporting Geriatric Medicine Departments to reach high standards in research, education, patient care, and treatment issues; to take part in geriatric medicine education, patients care, and academical studies; and to develop geriatric medicine in Turkey with the members of the interdisciplinary geriatric medicine team.
Academic Geriatrics Society, which is an observer member of European Union Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS) is organizing Academic Geriatrics Congress every year with broad participation, and publishing Academic Geriatrics Journal, the periodical official journal of Academic Geriatrics Society.
The attendants of Academic Geriatrics Congress are geriatricians, internal medicine specialists, neurologists, psychiatrists, other specialists, practitioners, family doctors, physicians working at nursing homes, social workers, and academicians from Geriatric Nursing, Physical Therapy, Nutrition, and everyone who is interested in the field of geriatric medicine. Academic Geriatrics Congress also welcomes guest speakers from EUGMS and IAGG.
Academic Geriatrics Society reflects the problems of geriatric medicine at different platforms, working on finding solutions and works hard to accomplish the mission of improving geriatric medicine in Turkey as a non-governmental organization.
